Self-Portrait Origami books in Contour Lines

My Art 1 classes wrapped up their contour drawing unit with a project I have always enjoyed doing with them- a self-portrait in objects. Traditionally I've had students come up with a drawing with 6 objects of their choosing that they feel describe them and make up a 'self-portrait in objects'. This year I decided to play with the structure and had them draw their objects on two square pieces of paper that we then put together to make an artist's book using an origami fold.
The results were so fun!

Here they are in a display case- love the way they look together

I arranged them so they could be viewed from most angles in the case!

Self-Portrait Collages in Art 1

Art 1 did a great job on these self-portraits. Working from a picture that was posterized in Photoshop to separate the values of the face into distinct shapes as their template, students used patterned and hand made papers to create these fun self portraits! The results were really fun. Next year I might steer away from the handmade papers with fiber as they were really hard to cut with exacto knives for the smaller shapes!
