Selection from this year's AP Concentrations

We've had a busy few months around here! My students in AP Studio Art turned in their AP portfolios on May 11th. This was a culmination of 2 years work- they used pieces for their "Breadth" section from projects we did the fall semester and also from their junior year in Art 3. Spring semester was spent working on their concentrations- 12 pieces following a theme of their choosing.

Marlee had a great concentration that told the story of a personal journey- she has a great illustrative style.

Illustrated Cubes in Art 1

Art 1 was exploring different mark-making techniques with pen and ink. They made a cube and then illustrated all sides with a different mark making technique . The cubes all had a cohesive theme. The themes were all so different! It was really fun to make a drawing turning into a 3-D object.

Experiments with Pinhole Cameras

I attended a really interested workshop at the Massachusetts Art Educators Association Conference in November on creating pinhole cameras from discarded soda cans.  I have always been interested in making these with students but wrongly assumed I needed a darkroom to develop the images.

Instead , students loaded the cameras with light sensitive paper and set them out for a minimum of 3 days. We ‘exposed’ them by scanning them and inverting the images in Photoshop. The bright arc of light you see in some of the images is the path of the sun over several days!!

We created a makeshift 'darkroom' with a stool and some industrial size garbage bags over them. We used a red led light strip inside so we could see what we were doing when we loaded the cameras with the light sensitive paper.

My Digital Photography students all made a pinhole camera, but some students in other classes were curious and made them too.

Building Community Through Art -Youth Art Month 2018 Exhibit

Recognitions- Massachusetts Amazing Emerging Artists Exhibit

Again, this year, Wayland High School is participating in Youth Art Month. I selected the following 6 students to display their work at the State Transportation building in Boston to represent some of my favorite projects! This exhibit, sponsored by the Massachusetts Art Education Association (MAEA), is part of Youth Art Month (YAM), a national celebration held each year during March, that emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for quality art programs in schools.

Across Massachusetts there are numerous celebrations and exhibits happening in schools, in districts, and regionally. The Boston exhibit, Building Community Through Art is the only statewide YAM Exhibit in Massachusetts and features student work from over 90 communities.

The Exhibit will be on display and open to the public weekdays 9-5,
February 5, 2018 - March 27, 2018.
It is closed weekends and Presidents’ Day 2/19/18)

The Massachusetts Art Education Association is also sponsoring a juried art exhibit called Recognitions- Massachusetts Amazing Emerging Artists for high school students, grades 9 – 12.  Five Wayland High School student pieces were selected amongst entries from across the state of original artwork from students in public and private schools. The exhibition will coincide with the Youth Art Month exhibit at the State Transportation Building with an awards ceremony on February 11, 2018.

Photography- Abstraction

My photo students looked at the work of Aaron Siskind, Alfred Stieglitz, and Paul Strand and explore creating non-representational images for a unit on abstraction. These are some of my favorites!
